5150 | Perfect Van Halen 1st album sound | VH 1st album sound.
I read an interview in which EVH stated that he had them do the 5150 II because he wanted a 5150 that would do more of what a Marshall does.
I own a 5150 II, and I've found the 'secret' EVH 1st album Marshall sound.
Here it is...
On Clean channel Pre 10, Bass Mid & Treble all on 10. Resonance on 3.5, Presence 6.5 bright On, Crunch On.
Add a little reverb and There ya Go.
I play a Wolfgang thru it like this and use a Peavey 5150 cab.
Try it out and enjoy.
Same settings also work well on the original 5150, but it's not as good. |

5150III 50 Watt | Crushing Metal, Thrash, Deathcore, Deathmetal, & scoop the mids for a more Hardcore tone.. | Here's the run down of how I run this rig on stage. Proud to be endorsed by ESP guitars, soo one of my eclipse II's (loaded with EMG's) is running into a line-6 transmitter pack, sending signal to it's receiver sitting in my custom flight case with everything else. Next in the chain is my Korg pitchblack tuner, next is the Xotic SP compressor pedal, into the Xotic EP Booster pedal, and finally an ISP Decimator and then staright in. All in front of the amp, no FX loop non-sense. And the 5150 III with my settings on the head, and pedals on hand.. Is hooked to a Mesa Boogie oversized Recto-Cab. And I'm telling you this thing SMASHES!! |

5150 | New Wave of American Metal | With "Bright" selection the lead tone becames usefull to both crushing rithm and solo. This tone is also good for live acts. Good with distorted bass and low drum freq. Guitar can be hearing much clearer. Also good for guitar driven metal music. I'm useing this setting with my treash-death metal band "Incarnate" on live actions. For recordings mid parameter maybe set as 5 between 6 (or higher level) to get a more bright and crunch to have more space to eq after rec. and mixing. İmpotant Hint: Always plug your jack to the right output from the back side of the head to the cab. Left output is cutting power of your amp and became it crunchy and muddy sound.Enjoy and Rock Hard. 5150 | Aggresive full bodied tone that cuts through mixes. | I've tried lots of tubes and I found the power tubes that offer the best response are the SED Winged C 6L6s. Superior quality and frequency response from these tubes. For pre-amps I like the Tung Sol 12AX7s because of their gain. I also use a Gold Lion (decent) for the PI and that does cut down on noise. The cab I use is a custom made Laney with Eminence Swamp Thangs on the bottom and Man O Wars on the top. The Swamp Thangs have incredible low frequency response and don't break up at all. The Man O Wars are very similiar to the Celestion GT12-75M. (better for mids and highs) I'm working on getting 2 Celestion V30s and replacing the Man O Wars just to check tonal differences. I use Ibanez and Agile 7 strings and drop em to B. I play a lot of death metal (Corpsey type) and hardcore (Hatebreedish) and I find my lows don't flop and my highs are pretty bright with these settings. Good overall balanced tone for metal, hardcore, and death metal. |

I play straight Death Metal like Obscura and Necrophagist with this tone and also use it to play Guthrie Govan and Chon. I also run a BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer and a Boss NS-2 Noise Supressor through this head because as most of you know this is a very noisy head. So in conclusion this is a very versatile tone but if your using a 7 or 8 string than this may not be the tone for you...I havent quite found my perfect 7 String tone yet |

5150 | Great lower volume metal sound with sweet clarity. 5150 Big Block Pat Pend. | This is a great lower volume metal tone with a nice bite and a good low-end tightness. Lowered gain = better tightness. I run this with my Gibson Traditional Pro (w/a Dimarzio Drop Sonic in the bridge with a Burstbucker Pro in the neck) through my Splawn 2x12 w/Big Block speakers. Sounds great for lower volume bedroom jamming. Sounds like a wall of doom right there in your very own bedroom..and I only run a 2x12 cab! This is a great all around tone and with the rhythm pre (clean channel gain) up a little higher it gives you a real crispy clean tone with a little grit...perfect for lowering the guitar's volume knob for a nice clear clean sound. A 3 channel-type usefulness kinda thing. Add an OD-9 or tubescreamer-type pedal with a clean boost setting with a warmer eq and it's heaven. Adjust all controls to taste afterwards. |

6505 | Crispy/Airy Metal Tone | This is actually a 6505+ configuration but based off of what I know about the amp it shouldn't matter which model you have, anyway this is a nice clear tone, very good distinction between chords and single notes as well as pedal tones, I use this tone myself since it's very clean, I run this right into the amp from my agile intrepid pro 8 string...this setup works real well if you palm mute over the top pickup (or the place where one would be if you don't have one) |

5150 II | Hard Rock/Classic Rock | Bone Stock. I use a circa 80's Charvel/Jackson with a DiMarzio Tone Zone Humbucker in bridge, stock Jackson single coil midle, and DiMarzio stacker coil Tone Zone in the neck. The high output pickups allow lower gain pre-amp settings than other pickups, but when I use the middle stock pickup, since the pre-gain is set lower it actually can pass for a clean sound through the rythm channel. Also, by keeping the lead channel pregain at about 4, I can get full crunch and still have some expression if played lightly.
Also, the Tone Zone pickups have a lot of bass in their output, so I reduce the low eq a bit.
Anything above 8 on the presence I would not recommend, because the negative aspect of this amp come through, namely the sizzling fizz.
At high volume, this amp can shave the hair follicles off of your inner ear.
Also, I run this amp out of a Marshall 1960A cabinet...another reason to back off on the high frequencies.
When I first had this amp, I ran the resonance and presence higher, but I have found that when playing with a band, it's too much: the overall sound becomes hum and fizz. Now I use a mid-boost type of setting, and it balances really well with my pickup/cabinet. Chunky palm mutes are chunky, chords ring musically, solos come through with pick attack AND tone. |

6505+ | perfect tone for any kind of metal and best clean tone possible from this amp | my posted settings will give u a really useable clean tone from the Rhythm channel and the perfect tone for any type of semi-modern and modern metal, including low tuned/7 string death metal/deathcore from the Lead channel.
the secret is keeping the Lead channel gain(pre) low for the best possible clarity because this allows you to crank the amps volume(post) a bit more, and once u do that u dont need as much because u are gettin extra juice from the power tubes. you need as much clarity as possible if you use 7 strings. the only pedals i use are a Maxon OD9 and ISP Decimator.
these amps dont NEED an OD9 or any overdrive pedal pedal but i find any high gain amp benefits from them, especially if you use 7 strings like i do. i personally consider mine a big part of my tone and here is why:
-i dont use the OD9 for added gain, but as a clean boost(drive-0, tone-6, level-8) for the Lead channel. this helps with clarity because the pedals natural and subtle tube-like compression makes harmonics a breeze(pinch and artifical, very important to me!!), increases sustain and adds a fluid feelings without having to increase the amps gain. also has slight midhump that gives the amp some added cutting power in the right places and a bass filter that tightens your low end up(tight low end is a must for low tuning). most Tubescreamers or OD pedals of the such will do what the OD9 does but i find the OD9 is the best in its class. has fullest sound and doesnt kill off all your low end the other OD's do. doesnt add much color to your tone either.-
the ISP is simply a noise reduction pedal because when you crank a high gain amp, esp one thats boosted and/or has active pickups, they tend to get noisy and wanna feedback!!!! the ISP is the best pedal for this, others i find degrade your tone.
these amps dont need to be modded, they are amazing in stock form!!!! you just need a good cab, good tubes and the right settings. i use a Vader 4x12 for ultimate clarity and beef with no speaker break up!! a cab loaded with Celestion G12-K100's will also give you this. for a warmer but equally badass tone, V30s are this amps best friend, preferrably in the form of a Mesa Recto Standard 4x12. with tubes, i prefer JJ.
oh and another thing, i use a Bc Rich Platinum series 7 string Warlock and Ibanez Rg7, both with EMG 707 pickups ;-) |

5150 | 1978 | Great 1st record tone. I recorded today with my wolfgang and 5150 I and the tone was unbelivable. The sound is exact to the Van Halen I. You need to also add alot of reverb. I use a Line 6 Verbzilla in the effect loop and my tone is heaven. Try it. You will Love it all you early brown lovers. |

5150 | Early Brown | This will really give you an early brown. Ed did not use alot of gain in his early days. Ed relied on his playing, presense, and resonace to get such a full sound. He also used a massive reverb tank, so I recomend getting a Line 6 Verbzilla for reverb. Don't a BOSS reverb because their product makes your reverb too harsh and not full and warm like Ed's. Just try the settings, you will love them. It will be hard to get used to the lower gain at first, (because it is easier to play with more gain) but you will sound alot less Heavy Metal and alot more warm Van Halen brown. |

5150 | Early Brown Sound | The Rhythm channel is for softer early Van Halen like Panama, Hot for Teacher, and songs with a little less distortion. The Lead channel is for a harder sound like Unchained, You Really Got Me, Aint Talkin Bout Love, and Eruption. The Rhythm sounds like a more fuzz with less Distortion. It sounds like if you go to a music store and play a Marshall Plexi on full volume. The Lead channel sounds like Ed's main "MODIFYED" Marshall used on all the early Van Halen I tracks. And yes his Marshalls were modyfied. |

6505+ | Mark Tremonti of Creed and Alter Bridge | 5150 II w/5150 slant cab. I played my PRS Singlecut loaded with a Gibson 500T bridge pickup and the stock PRS #7 neck pickup.(the Gibson 500T pickup was the pickup of choice for Tremonti prior to joining PRS and is identical in sound to the PRS Mark Tremonti bridge pickup) Volume on each pickup is at 10 and the PRS is strung with D'addario .009's. No effects used.
I figured this sound out when I was in a Guitar Center store. I picked up a PRS Mark Tremonti USA model off the rack, and plugged into a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier half stack. Right next to it was a 5150 II half stack. The Mesa package was priced at about $4500 and the 5150II was priced at about $2000 for the half stack!!!!

5150 | Classic Van Halen Brownsound | Why tons of people think this amp sucks is because they are idiots and can't setup a damn amp. They always leave the presence low. The presense is the main EQ of this amp. Eddie Van Halen's tone in the early days was very presencey but low at the same time. If you love his sound, EQ like this. Period. One thing is you might want to put a MXR Smart Gate in the effect loop. The sound I promise will not change. It will just be less !!!ERRRRRR!!! |

5150 | crunchy low end screaming highs | Comments and modifications to your 5150
no mods i have been playing with the 5150 stack and the evh wolfgang since 1997 this is the best equipment in the world. i just recently added an alesis midiverb 4 to my arsenal. i usually run this amp with no effects. it really doesn't need them. on occasion i run an old dod eq peddle thruoght the effects loop, that thing makes this amp sound 10x more brutal than without. still not sure what i think about the alesis. i also just recently purchased a triple xxx 212 combo. also a great amp. im trying to get back into more blues and the triple x has a great clean tone for this. it also screams from rock to metal but feels a little weak on the pregain, still it has a lot of great features and i am so sold on the peavey line. i have had to replace several lock nut screws on the wolfgang about a year ago and peavey sent them in 2 days absolutley free no questions asked. they are also very dedicated to helping their customers with any sound questions or even advise. a great company and unfortunatley a great partnership w/ evh that is now over. im glad i have held onto this stuff. |

5150 | Tight and clearer heavy tone | Bias and lower gain mod from fjamods.com. Jerry is a great guy and he knows how to get the best sounds out of 5150's. It's not a mod that makes the amp not sound like a 5150 anymore. Just takes out some gain to clear it up and give it more articulation and the bias mod warms things up and makes the gain sound less harsh. Really makes the amp it's best without making it sound like something totally differen't. Highly recommended for those who are even happy with their stock 5150. One tip that can help anyone. Make sure if you have High output pu's that you plug into the normal gain input. The high gain input sounds too fuzzy for high output pickups. |

5150 | BRILLIANT CLEANS! | NO MODS AT ALL.
This is a much better variation to the "really good cleans" settings I submitted last time & is mainly for the RHYTHM CHANNEL.
It totally opens up & has the 'touch' & 'bloom' that so many boutique/vintage amp lovers desire.
It's Extremely responsive to your guitars Volume Knob with these settings & let me warn you it is L-O-U-D! But it's worth it. I use a full stack & the tone is Godly! All that you ever wished your 5150 to be! These settings allow you to get everything from SPARKLY CLEAN to Downright MEAN & on into insane amounts of gain with your LEAD Channel's Pre/Post settings. Again, this is mainly for the Rhythm channel so prepare yourself!

EQ settings-100=10, 200=5, 400 ~0, 800=-5(negative 5..first detent below zero), 1.6k~0, 3.2k=5. and 6.4k=10, volume on eq=10. Also, my post volumes are adjusted accordingly. I played along with the right channel of the actual song which has Ed's guitar taken out and i added my own guitar to the left side. I also used more of a dry sound than the album to get a truer representation of the amp without alot of reverb. I used a Kramer Striker with a Seymour Duncan 59 in the bridge. 5150 | REALLY DECENT CLEANS on the Rhythm Channel | No mods done. Totally stock block letter head from 1994 confirmed by Roger Crimm at Peavey Forums.
I used two 5150 4x12 cabs from the same year too.
I found it easiest to achieve good cleans when I used the neck pup in my Ibanez RG3120-a Dimarzio PAF Pro pup.
I flicked to that pup in full humbucker mode & suddenly it just opened up & the cleans were there.
I jammed like that for another 45 minutes or so just amazed that I found really good usable cleans form my 5150 that so many people say it does not even have a clean channel. WRONG.
I even confirmed this with a friend that has a block letter 5150 as well. He too was really surprised.
Check it out people, you just may like it.
This works in either the High or Low input, but the CLEANS are much better in the LOW.
But the Leads are way better if you plug into the HIGH, so it is sort of a toss up. Your call.
peace. |

5150 II | Big, Warm, Ballsy, Lots of definition. | I just changed the 15k resistor in the bias section to a 6.8k. So I lowered the voltage running in the amp, to run my tubes alittle hotter. This mod made my amp sound full, warmer, and gave it a better tone. |
